Using Analogies to Empathize with the Other with Suthakaran Veerasamy

The ability to understand the experiences of the “other” is closely related to the capacity for cultural empathy. An important component of cultural empathy, emotional empathy, is often left unaddressed or unexplored when we attempt to “walk in the shoes” of the “other”. Consequently, we are left with an intellectual understanding of the experiences of the “other” that leaves us devoid of the more important emotional connection. This leaves us vulnerable to unintentionally causing harm, as we assume we understand the “other” better than we actually do.
